OBABL is proud to salute this year’s Power 100: The Most Influential Black Lawyers in the U.S.
The Deans
While African Americans are underrepresented in nearly every area of the legal profession, our selection committee was pleasantly surprised to learn this is not the case among leaders of our nation’s law schools. The American Bar Association currently lists 200 ABA-Approved law schools, of which 24 are headed by black deans — that’s 12 percent! You can find them on every rung of the law rankings ladder.
Each of the historically black law schools has a black dean, but so does UC Berkeley School of Law, which is ranked in the top 10 by U.S. News and World Reports. Black deans can also be found at state flagship law schools, such as The University of Maryland Law School and University of Kentucky College of Law. Boston College Law School, a premier catholic institution of higher learning recently appointed its first black dean.
Howard University Law School’s legendary dean, Charles Hamilton Houston, demonstrated the impact a great dean can have on not only students but also society at large. Today’s deans may not be striving to demolish Jim Crow laws, but they face an uphill battle nevertheless.
Today’s law schools face great challenges. Tuition is rising at a time when job prospects are waning. This has lead to stinging criticism and cries for law schools to make sweeping changes. As deans seek to reform law school education, many of their institutions are resistant to change. Added to this is the problem of shrinking black law student enrollment. These are formidable problems, but we believe these leaders are up to the task.
